그 나라가 그 나라 아닌가요?

국가란?

 

영어를 처음 배우면서  국가라는 단어를 country 혹은 nation으로 배웠습니다. 그냥 한글처럼 '국가, 나라' 정도의 차이가 있지 않을까 생각해 봤습니다만, 아무래도 궁금합니다. 알아보시러 출발하겠습니다.

Country

 

어원이 프랑스어입니다.  'countrie' 이렇게 생긴 단어입니다. 그 시작은 땅입니다. 이후 농촌 지역을 나타내거나 
의미하는 데 사용했는데, 아시다시피 중세시대에는 각 고을마다 영주가 따로 있고, 영주들 위에 왕이 있었습니다. 그런데 시골 영주들 중에 힘이 생겨서 독립하게 되어 새로운 나라로 선포하던지, 종교 박해를 피해 모인 시골에서 새로운 나라를 선포하는 사건들이 발생합니다. 그래서 시골도 됐다가 나라도 되는 개념이 생겨났습니다. 비슷한 단어로는 Land가 있습니다.

Nation

 

'Nation'은 라틴어 'Natio'에서 유래했습니다. Country가 땅에서 유래된 단어라면, Nation은 사람으로부터 출발한 단어입니다. 그래서 중세 시대에서는 '일반 대중'을 뜻하는 단어로 사용하다가 점차적으로 일반 대중의 무리나 모임으로써 같은 언어, 역사, 문화, 종교 등으로 연결된 사람들로 의미가 확장되다가 오늘날에 이르러서는 국가의 개념으로 정착하게 되었습니다.

 

 

The nation is divided into two major political parties, each with their own ideologies.

그 나라는 서로 다른 이념을 가진 두 개의 주요 정당으로 나뉘어 있습니다.

 

The nation's economy is heavily dependent on exports to other countries.

그 나라의 경제는 다른 나라로의 수출에 크게 의존하고 있습니다.

Kingdom

 

Kingdom은 King과 Dominion이라는 두 단어가 결합해서 만들어진 단어입니다. 말 그대로 King은 왕을 의미하고요, 
Dominion은 라틴어 'Dominio'에서 유래한 것으로 '지배권, 통치'를 의미합니다. 중세 이후 '국가, 영토'를 나타내는 의미로 발전했습니다. 로마시대의 단어들을 보면 비슷한 단어들이 여럿 있습니다. 그래서 킹덤의 의미는 '왕이 다스리는 나라'가 됩니다.
