이전 구문영어 2에서 '수일치'에 대해 조금 언급했습니다. 사실, 여행 영어에서는 그리 중요한 것이 아닙니다. 틀려도 상관없습니다. 그들이 알아서 듣습니다. 우리도 외국 사람이 우리말 할 때 사소한 실수는 크게 신경을 쓰지 않습니다. 다만, 시험 볼 때 조금 신경이 쓰입니다. Not only A (but also) B에서 but also를 쓰지 않고 말하는 네이티브를 만났을 때 틀린 문장을 쓴 것이 아닌지, 무척 용감한 상상을 한 적도 있습니다. A랑 B도라고 말할 수 있고, 이야기를 얘기라고 줄여서 말할 수 있습니다. 언어는 생명체와 같이 끊임없이 변하고 발전합니다.

Not only A but also B : A 뿐만 아니라 B

 

Not only did he finish his homework, but also he cleaned his room.

그는 숙제뿐만 아니라 방도 청소했다.

 

Not only is she beautiful, but also she is intelligent.

그녀는 아름답기만 한 것이 아니라 똑똑하기도 하다.

B as well as A : A와 마찬가지로 B도

 

cf. Not only A but also B와 B as well as A는 어감상 많이 비슷한 말이지만, 조금 다른 뉘앙스를 가지고 있습니다.

Not only A but also B는 A뿐만 아니라 B도 마찬가지임을 강조하는 것이고, "B as well as A"는 A가 B에 포함됨을 강조합니다. 엄청 시험에 많이 나왔습니다. 두 문장을 쓰고 같은 A 자리나 B자리에 괄호치고 알맞은 단어를 넣으라는 시험이 많았던 것 같습니다. 다시 새로운 기분입니다. 

 

Not only is John good at math, but he also excels in science.

존은 수학 뿐만 아니라 과학에서도 우수하다.

= John excels in science as well as being good at math

 

Not only did the company improve its sales, but it also expanded its market reach.

뒤에 오는 동사는 모두 '단수'로 취급됩니다.

 

 

Each member of the team received a medal for their hard work.

팀의 각 구성원들은 노력에 대한 보상으로 메달을 받았다.

 

Every student in the class passed the exam.

반의 모든 학생들이 시험에 통과했다.

 

Many of the guests at the party brought gifts for the host.

파티에 온 손님들 중 많은 사람들이 주인에게 선물을 가져왔다.

 

Either of these two books will make a great present.

이 두 권 중 하나를 선물로 주면 좋을 것이다.

 

Neither of the twins wants to go to the dentist.

cf. 다시 한번 말씀드리지만, 단, 복수 정말 중요하지 않습니다. 하지만, 알아두면 좋은 것이고, 이런 것이 쌓여 지식이 됩니다.

에서 8시 10, 12시라고 해서 복수가 아니고 
거리
를 나타낼 때도 100미터 1000미터라고 해서 복수를 사용하지 않고, 
가격
을 나타내는 단위 또한 만원, 십만 원이라고 해서 복수 동사를 사용하지 않습니다. 
무게
도 마찬가지입니다. 모두 단수 취급 하는 것을 이 자리에서 암기하고 넘어갑시다. 잊으면, 나중에 다시 외우면  되지요~!
