After Twenty Years

어려서 가슴을 울렸던 명작, 바로 오헨리의 단편집입니다. 빨간 책에 한쪽은 한글, 한쪽은 영어로 되어 있던 책이 유행했던것 같습니다. 그 유명한 마지막 잎새도 있지요. 구절구절이 참 마음을 울리는 반전이 있습니다. 오늘의 작품은 자주 접하지 않았을까 하는 작품을 골랐습니다. 아래에 원문이 있는 사이트를 링크해 놨습니다. 기회가 된다면, 한 작품씩 도전을 해 보도록 하겠습니다.

 

The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue impressively. The impressiveness was habitual and not for show, for spectators were few. The time was barely 10 o'clock at night, but chilly gusts of wind with a taste of rain in them had well nigh depeopled the streets.

 

* beat 경찰이 규칙적으로 순찰하는 구역

길을 따라 순찰하는 경찰관은 인상적으로 걸어갔다. 이 인상은 습관적이었고 꾸밈이 아니었다. 관람객은 거의 없었다. 시각은 밤 10시도 조금 지나지 않은 때였지만, 나는 비를 느낄 정도의 차가운 돌풍으로 거리는 거의 사람이 없었다.

 

Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye adown the pacific thoroughfare, the officer, with his stalwart form and slight swagger, made a fine picture of a guardian of the peace. The vicinity was one that kept early hours. Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store or of an all-night lunch counter; but the majority of the doors belonged to business places that had long since been closed.

When about midway of a certain block the policeman suddenly slowed his walk. In the doorway of a darkened hardware store a man leaned, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.

 

* hardware store 하드웨어 제품을 판매하는 곳으로 주로 건축자재나 공구, 전기 용품, 철물 점 등을 가리킵니다.

 

어느 한 블록의 중간쯤에 다다를 즈음, 경찰관은 갑자기 걸음을 늦추었다. 어두운 철물점 현관문 앞에 한 남성이 터뜨리지 않은 시가를 입에 물고 기대어 있었다. 경찰관이 그에게 다가가자 남성이 빠르게 말을 꺼냈다.

 

“It's all right, officer,” he said, reassuringly. “I'm just waiting for a friend. It's an appointment made twenty years ago. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn't it? Well, I'll explain if you'd like to make certain it's all straight. About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands--‘Big Joe Brady's restaurant.’”

“Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was torn down then.”

“괜찮습니다, 경찰관 나리,” 그가 안심시켜 말했다. “저는 그냥 친구를 기다리고 있어요. 이번 약속은 20년 전에 잡았어요. 좀 웃기게 들릴 수도 있죠? 그럼 제대로 설명해 드릴게요. 그 정도로 오래전에 이 가게가 위치한 곳에는 식당이 있었죠. ‘빅조 브레디의 식당’이라고요.”

“5년 전까지였죠,” 경찰관이 말했다. “그 때 허물어졌습니다.”

 

The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, square-jawed face with keen eyes, and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set.

문 앞에 서 있는 사람이 성냥을 세우고 그의 시가에 불을 붙였습니다. 불빛 아래에는 창백한 네모턱과 예리한 눈, 오른쪽 눈썹 근처에 있는 작은 하얀 흉터가 드러났습니다. 그의 스카프 핀은 크고 특이하게 세팅된 다이아몬드였습니다.

 

“Twenty years ago to-night,” said the man, I dined here at ‘Big Joe Brady's’ with Jimmy Wells, my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and I were raised here in New York, just like two brothers, together. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune. You couldn't have dragged Jimmy out of New York ; he thought it was the only place on earth. Well, we agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come. We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be.

“오늘밤으로부터 20년 전,” 남자가 말했다. 저는 ‘빅조 브레디 식당’에서 제 베프이자 세상에서 가장 멋진 친구인 지미 웰스와 함께 저녁을 먹었어요. 그와 저는 뉴욕에서 함께 자란 두 형제처럼 느껴졌어요. 저는 18살이었고, 지미는 20살이었죠. 다음 날 아침에는 부귀를 쌓기 위해 서부로 떠날 예정이었습니다. 하지만 지미는 뉴욕에서 벗어날 생각이 없었어요 ; 그는 그것이 지구상에서 유일한 곳이라고 생각했죠. 그런데, 우리는 그 날밤에 정확히 20년 후의 그날과 시간에 다시 여기서 만나기로 약속했어요. 어떤 상황에서든 우리의 처지가 어떻든 간에, 우리가 어디서든 와야 한다고 생각했죠. 20년이 지나면 각자 운명을 꿰뚫고 부를 쌓아야 할 터였기 때문이죠, 어떤 운명이든 말이에요.
