I have a dream

마틴 루터 킹 주니어 목사가 1963년 8월 28일 워싱턴 DC에서DC 열린 ‘일자리와 자유를 위한 워싱턴 촛불집회(March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom)’에서 한 유명한 연설 중 일부를 발췌해 낭독하는 내용입니다.

 

 

 

 

I have a dream

 

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

나는 언젠가 이 나라가 일어서 자신의 신념을 담고 있는 진정한 의미를 실현하게 될 것을 꿈꾸며 말합니다. “우리는 이러한 진리를 자명하게 여기며, 모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다”는 문장이 그 신념입니다. 나는 언젠가 조국 조지아의 붉은 언덕에서, 전 노예들의 자식들과 전 노예 주인들의 자식들이 형제애의 자리에 함께 앉을 수 있는 날이 오길 꿈꾸며 말합니다.

 

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

나는 언젠가는 공정하지 못한 열기에 휩싸인, 억압의 열기에 휩싸인 미시시피 주조차도 자유와 정의의 오아시스로 변모할 것을 꿈꾸며 말합니다. 나는 언젠가 내 네 명의 작은 자녀들이 피부색으로 판단받는 것이 아니라 그들의 인격으로 평가받는 나라에서 살게 될 것을 꿈꾸며 말합니다.

 

We want our freedom and we want it now! We do not want to go to jail, but we will go to jail if this is the price we must pay for love, brotherhood and true peace. I appeal to all of you to get in this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village, and every hamlet of this nation, until true Freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete.

We must get in this revolution and complete the revolution. We are not a pressure group, we are not an organization or a group of organizations, we are not a mob. We are the advanced guard of a massive, moral revolution for jobs and freedom. This revolution reverberates throughout the land touching every city, every town, every village where black men are segregated, oppressed and exploited.

But this civil rights revolution is not confined to the Negro, nor is it confined to civil rights for our white allies know that they cannot be free while we are not. We will kneel-in; we will sit-in until we can eat in any corner in the United States. We will walk until we are free, until we can walk to any school and take our children to any school in the United States.

하지만 이 시민 권리 혁명은 흑인에게 국한되지 않았으며, 우리의 백인 동맹자들은 우리가 자유롭지 않은 한 자유로울 수 없다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 우리는 무릎 꿇고 앉아서(평화로운 시위)를 할 것이며, 미국의 어떤 구석에서든 음식을 먹을 수 있을 때까지 계속해서 시위를 할 것입니다. 우리는 자유로울 때까지 걸어 나갈 것이며, 미국 어디에서든지 어떤 학교든지 걸어서 갈 수 있을 때까지 우리 아이들을 어떤 학교든지 데려갈 것입니다.

 

And we will sit-on and we will kneel-in and we will lie-in if necessary until every Negro in America can vote. But you young people must do one thing, and I know you have heard this story a thousand times from your mothers and fathers, like I did from my mama... You must get an education. You must go to school, and you must learn to protect yourself.

 

우리는 필요하다면 앉아서, 무릎을 꿇고, 누워서라도 모든 미국 흑인이 투표할 수 있을 때까지 싸울 것입니다. 그러나 여러분, 청년들은 한 가지 일을 해야 합니다. 그리고 당신들의 어머니나 아버지로부터, 나와 같이 내 엄마로부터 천 번쯤 들어본 이야기일 것입니다. 그것은 교육을 받아야 한다는 것입니다. 학교에 가서 자신을 지키는 방법을 배워야 합니다.

 

And you must learn to protect yourself with the pen, and not the gun... the pen really is mightier than the sword. We will not slow down. We will not stop our militant, peaceful demonstrations. We will not come off of the streets until we can work at a job befitting of our skills in any place in the land.

그리고 총이 아닌 펜으로 자신을 지키는 방법도 배워야 합니다... 펜은 칼보다 강력합니다. 우리는 속도를 늦추지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 우리의 격렬하고 평화로운 시위를 멈추지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 우리의 기술에 어울리는 직업을 땅 어디든지 할 수 있을 때까지 거리에서 내려오지 않을 것입니다.

 

We will not stop our marching feet until our kids have enough to eat and their minds can study a wide range without being cramped in Jim Crow schools. And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual,

Jim Crow laws는 미국 남부에서 19세기 말부터 1960년대 중반까지 시행된 인종 차별적인 법률로 흑인들은 백인들과 분리되어 생활해야만 했고, 흑인들의 공립 학교는 교육시설이 저조하여 교육 기회가 제한되었습니다.
마틴 루터 킹 주니어 목사는 이러한 인종 차별을 향해 항거하는 시위에서 Jim Crow 학교에서 불평등과 제한된 교육 기회를 지적하며, 이러한 상황이 개선되어야 한다는 메시지를 전달하고 있습니다.
* gentiles “Gentiles”란 히브리어로 “이스라엘 족속 외의 다른 민족”을 뜻합니다.

우리는 우리 아이들이 충분한 식량을 먹을 수 있고, 그들의 마음이 짐 크로우 학교에서 협소해지지 않은 상태로 다양한 것을 공부할 수 있을 때까지 행진을 멈추지 않을 것입니다. 그리고 이것이 일어나면, 자유가 울리게 할 때, 모든 마을과 모든 시에서, 모든 주와 모든 도시에서 우리는 하나닥의 손을 잡고, 옛날 흑인 영적 노래 가사처럼 노래할 수 있는 그날을 가속화할 수 있을 것입니다. 그 때 모든 하나님의 자녀들, 흑인과 백인, 유대인과 이방인, 프로테스탄트와 가톨릭이 함께 손을 잡아 노래할 수 있는 그날을 기다릴 수 있을 것입니다.

 

“Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

“마침내 자유! 드디어 자유로! 전능하신 하나님께 감사를, 우리는 마침내 자유로!”
